Speech & Language Therapy Assessment

Assessments are an important diagnostic tool which are used to determine therapy goals as well as formally determine if your child has a speech-language disorder. A formal or informal speech-language assessment will be conducted to assess your child’s speech and language abilities.

Assessments may take from one to two hours. It is recommended that parents be present throughout the assessment to enable them to understand how the assessment is conducted and the skills which are being assessed. Depending on the child's needs and the aspects of language being assessed, the assessment may comprise structured or unstructured tasks and activities.

Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy sessions target the child’s speech and language skills. Activities are based on specific speech-language goals discussed with parents. Goals are determined based on the assessment and are often modified and updated as the child progresses.

Activities are usually interactive in order to engage the child. Therapy homework may be given for continued follow-up at home in order to maximize the benefits of therapy.

Therapy sessions usually last for an hour each week and include feedback and explanations to parents. Children may be discharged from therapy once the speech-language goals have been attained, or when their parents and the speech-language therapist feel that they are ready for a home program.
