Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy sessions last for one hour, including time taken to explain, discuss and update parents about the therapy goals, therapy activities and the child’s progress. Therapy goals will be discussed with parents and are usually determined based on the assessment results as well as input from parents. Therapy goals are often updated and modified as therapy progresses in order to ensure that the goals continue to correlate with the child’s speech and language needs.

Speech and language therapy sessions may include interactive activities such as games or table-top activities which require writing, depending on the therapy goals and speech-language needs of each child. Therapy homework may be given for continued follow-up at home in order to maximize the benefits of therapy and the child’s progress.

Therapy sessions are usually on a weekly basis, although this may be modified depending on the child’s needs, parents’ input and the speech-language therapist’s recommendations. Children may be discharged from therapy once the speech-language goals have been attained, or when their parents and the speech-language therapist feel that they are ready for a home program.
